Okay, I know what you’re all thinking.
What the hell is TOFOP doing with a professional-looking website? Look, we know we sometimes come across like the village idiots of podcasting, with our non-plugging in of microphones and losing of episodes, but deep down we have dreams. Not Martin Luther Vandross (I think that’s his name) type dreams, but we do see a future in which veteran T-Baggers and the yet-to-be-aurally corrupted can come together and share in our particular brand of whimsy.
Let me take you on a journey back in time. We’ll fire up the the flux capacitor and punch a date into the time circuits: Feb 19 2010. Wil and I are driving from Sydney to Byron Bay. Wil’s on the road trialling his new show and I’m filming the whole process for a web series. It’s about an 8-hour drive (or longer when you’re stopping every second town to film poorly thought out sketches) and we’re just bullshitting to pass the time. We’d also been listening to Smodcast, which was and continues to be, one of the best podcasts going around. They made it seem simple: two friends, a couple of mics and some free-flowing conversation.
So approximately four months later, after purchasing a podcasting kit from eBay, we sat in my kitchen with one mic taped to a camera tripod (we hadn’t thought to buy a second stand) and recorded the first ever episode of TOFOP. It was fun, gave us an excuse to get together every week and meant we had a reason to talk endlessly about Batman.
So why am I telling you this hokey, nostalgic origin story? Because back then we really had no expectations. We were like Will Smith in I Am Legend, sitting on a dock, broadcasting into the ether, hoping that maybe someone was listening. And if it had lost steam after a few weeks, we probably would have let it go. But something strange began to happen: we started to get downloads, but not just downloads…HOLY SHIT! It was an audience!
And the longer we’ve gone on the more integral you have become to the show. We love interacting with you guys online, reading your comments on Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr. And then there was the live show – don’t get me started on that! The energy in the room was insane and as much as I’d like to think it was just down to Wil, Dave, Greg and me, the honest truth is that it was the audience that made it so memorable.
Which brings me all the way back to this new website. We want it to be a place where you guys can come and get your TOFOP fix, but we also want to expand the scope of what TOFOP can be. That’s why you’ll notice a few new features on the site, like merchandise, a blog, news and a forthcoming TOFOP Youtube channel (TOFOV?), so you can expect to (literally) see more from us in the coming weeks.
Think of this as your website, the people’s website, mi website, su website. You can still find us on Facebook and Twitter and all that jazz, but at least now everything is in the one place. If you want to help keep this place running, chuck down a few bucks for a t-shirt or a poster. If you don’t have the cash to spare, that’s cool, all we ask of you is that you keep listening to the show and rating it on iTunes.
…And avenge our deaths in the event of assassination.
But that’s it.
